Summative Assessment
Summative assessments are normally carried out periodically, for example at the end of a term, every half term or the end of the year. They are used to provide a summary or the children’s learning and are more commonly known as assessment of learning. Summative assessment can be used alongside formative assessment ‘to confirm the teacher’s opinion of what children have learned and what progress has been made since the previous comparable activity or test’ (Hayes, 2012:339). This is then used to inform levelling of children and to develop targets for children as well.
Summative assessment can be carried out in a number of ways including end of term assessments, national testing, using APP (assessing pupil progress) and examples of children’s work throughout the year. Some of these are compulsory like the national testing and others are completely down to the school such as APP.
