Assessing Pupil Progress (APP)
APP is used to track children’s progress on a grid with each level on it. The class teacher will then highlight periodically what level the child is on. Each time they assess a different colour will be used to highlight so it is possible to clearly see the progress the child has made.
This is an example of an APP grid that is used in schools (click image to see a bigger version). Once the table has been highlighted periodaclly throughout the year, the class teacher will then give the child a level based on the National Curriculum descriptors. This will then follow the child up throughout the school to give other teachers an idea of what level the children are one.
Not every school will use APP. It is entirely up to the school if they use it and how they use it. APP is designed to ease the workload of teachers for assessment and the evidence that is used should be work the children have already completed and not a separate assessment at the end of the term.
DfCSF (2008:9) states 'APP is about pupils - identifying what they're good at and where they need more support.' Using APP can then help to inform planning and to target specific children for specific needs or targets.
